Free Comic Book Day -- Hypernaturals!

This Saturday, the 5th of May, it's Free Comic Book Day... a ridiculously simple reason to support your local comic book shop. Free comics! You see? The clue's in the title. Anyway...

... one of the comics you'll be able to pick up for free this Saturday is The Hypernaturals, the new cosmic book Andy and I have created for Boom!

We're really excited about this - which we developed at the invitation of the lovely people at Boom! It isn't just new characters we're inventing, it's a whole new universe. If you liked what we did with the Legion at DC, or cosmic books like Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel, you'll love this. The difference is that we can do stories here that we could never do elsewhere. There are always going to be constraints when you're operating inside the marvel Universe or the DCU: stories that just can't work because they clash too badly with established continuity. With The Hypneraturals, we're making our own rules, and they're going to make for some epic stories.

We're flattered that Boom! has such faith in this book that they've made it their Free Comic Book Day showcase: it's quite an investment. This isn't an advance print of the first issue, this is a whole sixteen page prologue that we've created especially for the event, and it won't be reprinted in the series (expect to see it in the trade collection).  And it's not just sixteen pages of strip either, there's back-up material (a feature we intend to run through the series), helping to build up the universe. There's a preview feature here.

Enjoy Free Comic Book Day, and support your local store... and enjoy The Hypernaturals too! The series debuts in July, and we've got some awesome characters and storylines planned for you.

BTW - if you pick up your Hypernaturals FCBD issue from your local store, and your local store happens to be The Grinning Demon in Maidstone, tell Graham behind the counter if you want yours put aside for me to sign!

Speaking of the Grinning Demon, the convention they ran - DemonCon - was fabulous, and I urge you to attend the next one. It was small but perfectly formed, and I'll write up a report and share a few pics later if I can.

Speaking of signings, I'll be posting soon with advance notice of some big ones later in the year (including Canada!), but for the time being you should know that Graham, Aaron and I will be at the Dublin GW store on Saturday the 26th of May for a mega-signing!

Two things:

First, assuming it will be available in the US, I will pick up my copy of The Hypernaturals.

Second, please for the love of the God-Emperor, visit Seattle! I will buy you a lovely fish dinner if you do. Bring Aaron and Graham too and we'll make it a party.

Hey, Dan: are you working on the new FFG roleplaying game "Only War?" I know you did some background work in the original Dark Heresy RPG. It would seem to make sense for you to be involved, given your role as both Grand Master of the Ordos Scarus and the High Warmaster of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade...

Oi Dabnett! Just seen the cover for Pariah. Sooooooooo exciting!!! The anticipation for it must be like waiting in the queue to watch the last performance of LCD Soundsystem. End of an era.

There is one other thing I want to say... BIGMOUSE!!!

Good evening to you sir

Tom

I got this, and I also preordered Hypernaturals # 1. I'm very excited about it.

And by the way, I just reviewed New Deadwardians # 2 here:

Changing times...

I first read a Mr Dan Abnett story back when I was a nipper, in the special Xmas bumper Issue 4 of Inferno! It was on a dark winter night with the wind howling outside and the rain coming in sheets against the window, sitting in my Uncle's warm, cosy kitchen in Hammersmith. Gaunt's Ghosts had me hooked immediately and to this day it is a secret pleasure of mine and the only connection I still have with GW.

Please note, for those who haven't read the Gaunt's Ghosts novels or been to the cinema recently, the following will contain some minor spoilers (probably quite a big one for the movie - but with trailers these days you know whats going to happen before you've even bought a ticket).

For me it always used to be Gaunt. Those scenes in Necropolis arguing for a different strategy to Sturm's for the defence of Vervunhive or getting General Grizmund out of jail; standing up to Hark in Honour Guard; pissing off the uptight officers in Straight Silver; leading the defence of the Doctrinopolis in Sabbat Martyr; and running down a grassy field, firing a bolt pistil in both hands to take on two wire wolves and save Rawne's arse in Traitor General. Wilder won His Last Command (my personal favourite). The last scene with himself and Gaunt was awesome.

But, now that the books are well into their teens and I'm in my 20s, I'm starting to like Rawne more. He was always a bastard, but now I think he is an uber cool bastard. The coolness he demonstrated in Blood Pact, locked in a cell whilst disarming a Blood Pact officer. And has bad-assery as head of the Suicide Kings in Salvation Reach (pushing his body to the limit to save Yoncy, but then acting all nonchalant about it afterwards). This guy is the sh*t!

So, anyone gone from Gaunt to Rawne?

There I've said it, but I still feel somewhat guilty.

P.S. Anyone else think that a recent sci-fi movie had the closest movie version of a Space Marine yet?

Nah, I think Gaunt is still "it". I like his leadership over Rawnes. It a nice setup to have a hero next to an anti-hero. It's a good cop and bad cop scenario.

who kidnapped Mr. Abnett?

Hey Dan - how would Gaunt deal with a pregnant female Guardsman (Guardswoman?) under his command? Execution for dereliction of duty? Reassignment to administrative duties? Whaddaya reckon?

Execution,no way especially if a Tanith was the sire, not many of them around these days.
I would think stripped of rank to buck private, then made sure she was ridden hard by the sarge.
