Games Day Germany

Expect a regular blog bulletin again soon. I just wanted to send out a swift public apology. With enormous regret, I find I am unable to attend this weekend's Games Day in Germany. I am REALLY sorry to let the German readership down, and I'm also sorry for myself, to be perfectly honest, because this was going to be my first German Games Day, and I was looking forward to meeting the readers there face-to-face, especially regular posters like Packmaster. Pack, I hope you'll be able to forgive me for this last minute disappointment.

Basically, I'm been pretty unpleasantly ill these last few days, and I'm not getting well enough again fast enough. The advice is, don't fly (it's something exotically viral - I'm having tests done). I have already told BL to book me up for Germany next year, and in the meantime I will see if there's anything else that can be done to make up for my spectacular failure to appear. Watch this space.

Once again, I'm sorry, folks. I hope you all have a great Games Day.

So bad news. I am going to go to the german Games Day because of you! And then I read the bad news on the german Gw-homepage. But well, there are also good news, I don't have to decide the book You should sign.

    Greetings from Germany.

  6. I must confess, I nearly got a heard attack the moment I read the news on the BL HP. Well, it's better that way for your immune system, I think, so best wishes for a speedy recovering. I go bite my desk now.

So, well, I'll survive. And there I had got you some german choc for Nik. Need that myself now to stay happy ;)

Awaiting GD Germany next year. I'll get you there myself if needed ;)

    Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!! WTFBBQ???!??!!?

I only rammed my hard-earned money down GW's greedy throat to see the man who single-handedly re-invented the WH40K universe, who reformed the "shoot your own troops first ask questions later" commissar stereotype, who showed that the "sledgehammer tactic" Imperial Guard is actually made up of normal humans, who showed that not all common sense has completely gone out the window in th 41st century. And now this.

Dan, please expect a huge package in the next few days containing my Dan Abnett library, which you will kindly sign. Please also include a dedication to me plus some elaborately drawn sketches of the main battle scenes described in the respective book. When sending them back also include a cheque covering my postage expenses s.v.p.
I guess this is the least thing to do in order to compensate for your no-show-up-ance (to quote Ron Manager: "Is that a word? It is one now.").

Ah well, I guess there's nothing else to do but to say "Get well soon." and "Hopefully see you soon in Germany.".

Hope you get better soon Dan, I myself have broken one of the little bones in the middle of my left foot, and am in excrutiating pain whenever it touches the floor. How, I don't know, and I had to cancel my seat at a big dinner party I had been waiting for all year (bloody NHS) - not quite on the same level I know, but commiserations!

  16. Hope you feel better soon Mr. Abnett

Oh and for a laugh one of those tour guides you saw on your visit to the Pentagon was doing the walking backwards thing and tripped over a waste bucket. He was navy so I got a good laugh out of it myself.

  17. Dan, I am really not amused to read on the BL HP that there is a new GG short story... on GD UK. Why are we always treated like that anywhere else? :(

    Hi Dan,
Yeah, bummer for ya, I suppose! Still, it would be the ultimate irony to go, and then give your German following something, eh? Ah well, get well soon and enjoy next year's GamesTag! Some of the friendliest people in Europe, pommes-frites mit bockwurst und all teh beer you can drink! (Sorry, but my German is completely broken after 4 years of neglect!) Oh well, it's 23.30 and I'm off to bed! Toodles!

  26. Dan- Sorry to hear about that, I hope you feel better soon.

Big- Where did you hear about Fell Cargo miniatures? Are there pictures?

Ross- I've broken that bone as well... twice. Are you in the Robocop boot?

  27. Well, GD Germany wasn't that bad. Missed you, Dan but... what the crud. Met with a big bunch from the forums, and the Golden Demon for the best Costums went with us (well, our Commissar suffered enough for that goal ;) ). I had fun enough. Well, not enough, but... ah, you get the point.

Memo: never go to the Hard Rock Café when you need two hands to count the people in your group. The waiters won't be able to satisfy your needs :D

All Hail to the German Railroad Company. I could have stayed an hour longer at GD and I would not have noticed, at home finally.

  29. Ah the classic line, no wonder I couldn't find it on the website. Thanks.

    Hiwayrobry-

You were the other Preston/Child fan, right? Just broke the halfway mark on Wheel of Darkness and am having a great time. It's... a nice breather after the Diogenes arc.

It's not as good asCabinet of Curiosities of course, but so far it's delivering the usual Preston/Child "I'm addicted to crack" reading experience where you're trying to squeeze as many chapters into lunch hour as possible.

Damn, I was really looking forward meeting you in person. Then I found myself in a bit of a pickle- I wasn't able to attend this year's Games Day... and although I really wish you a speedy recovery, I must congratulate you on your impeccable timing, sparing me the situation of not being able to meet you in person.

Get well soon, and get some new Ghost stuff on the way!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Big - The application form I just filled in took me the whole of 2 minutes to do....and how they manage to pull candidates from them, I'll never know as they only ask for the basics.

And it's hard enough to try and convince people you're a tip-top person in the unlimited space that is the internet, so I'm screwed when it comes to single words.

    BOO!

See now thats the thing about good writers they can describe something absolutly in a paragraph
i however take an hour over one question....go figure.
im in the middle of a career change
im going through a whole "Grosse Point Blanke "thing at the moment and i really am dreading my school reunion in August.

  35. Big-

I had a conversation like that with my boss about a month ago.

Boss: Rob, what's your favorite part of this job?

Rob: Doing whatever you tell me to, ma'am.

Boss: You'll go far. No really, what's you're favorite thing about the job? What makes you get up every morning and come here?

Rob: Mostly because when I'm here, I get paid by the hour. If I wasn't getting paid, I probably wouldn't show up.

    (Thoughtful pause.)

Boss: Actually, that's why I come here too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. probably best not to put your name when you're talking about your career as an assassin, Big!

@ Rob - I am indeed suited and booted - White plastic suits me I think.

  38. I like job applications Big, fiction is fun

I always win it in the interview if theres a woman there, can normally charm the job out of them.

Once actually got a job as I 'had an amazing voice', I personally would rate my legs higher in the equation but each to their own.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What I don't understand is why 'I = teh win!' would probably be frowned upon on an application form......because that is basically what it all boils down to really.

You think you're the best and you use a lot of words to try and convey that, without sounding like an egotisitcal burke!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous11:31 pm

    Xhalax-i am an egotistical burke,
i think i will go with Hussar and show a bit of leg.....and perhaps do the dance!

  46. Dan,
    You feeling better yet?

    rob
I'm also about halfway through Wheel of Darkness. Pendergast has just found the Agozyen (that would make a cool Space Marine chapter, no?) I like that there's a little more mysticism and supernaturality (is that a word?, supernaturalness? I'll let those wiser than me figure it out) than the last few novels. Yes, Diogenes was becoming a bit stale. But Wheel is definitely a page-turner.
Also, that conversation you had with your boss sounds frighteningly familiar! Too bad we can't all do what we love and get paid for it. (I'm looking at you Dan!) :)
